Sandra Farris was born in Mount Pleasant, Texas. The eldest of five daughters, she spent a lot of time babysitting her younger sisters while her mother worked. To entertain them she told them stories and eventually began writing those stories down. “So many stories filled my head, I had to share them,” she says now, “With my younger sisters, I had a captive audience.”
After many moves across Texas, her family moved to Los Angeles, California, in Sandra’s junior year of high school, where she served a year on the school newspaper and planned to make a career in newspaper reporting. However, that was put on hold when she married soon after graduation and subsequently came the births of three sons.
Sandra continued her writing when she could, but it wasn’t until her sons were grown that she became serious about it. She attended a local community college where she resumed her education and honed her writing skills.
Can You Hear the Music? was the first book she wrote, but the second one published. Upon discovering her sister, Darlene McKeen, wrote poems, Sandra convinced her to coauthor a book of short stories and poems. Wind Dancers was the result of that effort and the first to be published. Lady Ace and Obituary Column followed Can You Hear the Music?.
Obituary Column came about in a very unusual way. Although her marriage ended in divorce many years ago, Sandra’s ex husband approached her recently with a basic idea he had for a book he would like for her to write. Thus Obituary Column was born. An independent film has been made based on the book and is now in post-production.
Sandra makes her home in Tucson, Arizona. She retired from a government job to devote more time to her writing. When she isn’t writing, she enjoys traveling, hiking, gardening and most things that take place outdoors.
